Sunday 19 July 2009: Hove Lawns, Brighton Peace Messenger is delighted to announce that we are in receipt of a grant from ‘Awards For All’ towards our 2009 Peace Picnic. This year’s Event promises to be bigger and more varied, with activities, exhibitions, performances, extra stages and stalls giving greater opportunities for all in the community to get involved.

Peace Messenger celebrates Brighton & Hove’s UN Peace Messenger City status:

Awarded to the city in 1987. Since 2000 free fun events have encouraged local community and voluntary sector workers, event organisers, musicians, poets, dancers, teachers, environmental and peace activists across the city to join together in creating a series of workshops, school events, debates and films, performances of comedy and theatre, live music and exhibitions throughout Brighton and Hove. Peace Messenger aims to model participation and explore how to develop local community cohesion and consciousness with respect for human rights and freedoms, culminating in an annual Peace Picnic Festival on Hove Lawns. Run exclusively on volunteer time and expertise, this popular festival has previously attracted 14000 – 24000 people.

Peace Messenger invites everyone to join in from 12noon on Sunday 19 July. on Hove Lawns. The opening ceremony features a live orchestral performance of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, followed by a recital of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, launching the event in the spirit of cultural and social action that defines Peace Messenger’s work. Participate in The Peace of Art, forming a human Peace Sign with musicians and performers and be aerial photographed! Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of a spectacular symbol of our community united in peaceful progress.

With many tents and stages already confirmed, expect to find an area for debate and discussion with big name speakers discussing issues that are relevant to all of our lives. Musical talent features a wide range of local artists from jazz to ska, reggae to hip hop, classical to world music showcasing Brighton & Hove’s diverse creative community. Everyone is welcome to help organise or participate in Peace Picnic 09. Please get in touch with Peace Picnic Coordinator: jackie.chase@virgin.net or phone 07799564620
